Golden Slipper

Although it sounds like something a handsome prince might slip on to the dainty foot of a serving girl, you wouldn’t have much luck trying the same process with the winner of this Golden Slipper. Let’s face it, frisky two-year-old thoroughbreds wouldn’t even grasp the concept. Mind you, with the prize pot for this race a cool three and a half million dollars, the owners could certainly treat everyone they knew to a pair!

It’s the Golden Slipper Stakes we’re talking about, and it is firmly placed as our country’s premier race for the best of the two-year-old thoroughbreds. The prize fund, already mentioned, also takes it right to the top of the world list of such events. It is produced by the Australian Turf Club and is listed as a Group 1 Thoroughbred 1200m race; some older devotees might hark back to those early days when it was a slippy six furlongs!

The Golden Slipper field meets and races on an autumn Saturday, under set weights conditions, and the venue is the splendid facility at Rosehill Gardens in western Sydney. This course was first brought to life by John Bennett and was ready for business by April 1885. When you pay a visit, as you should, you’ll find a superb modern facility offering great entertainment facilities, and you can admire the superb gardens set around an impressive, sweeping track. It is no wonder that Golden Slipper Day is an annual pilgrimage for so many with a passion for the turf and those who run and ride on it.

Some famous winners

2017 champion was She Will Reign, the list of other winners since the first running in the late 1950s contains some great names, including Sky High, Sebring, Miss Finland, and Rory’s Jester. The first victor was the magnificent Todman, and one of the lead-in races where the winner automatically qualifies for the Golden Slipper is the Todman Stakes.

A superb venue

The Golden Slipper field is put to work as the centrepiece of the greatly enjoyed Golden Slipper Day at Rosehill Gardens. The events of the day include a total of four other highly impressive and much-anticipated Group 1 events. Treat yourself to a cold one if you know that these are The Galaxy, the George Ryder Stakes, the Ranvet Stakes, and the aptly named Rosehill Guineas.

Analysing the Golden Slipper form guide

Let’s start with the barrier draw. Does it make any difference? That’s a subject of much debate, but a horse’s connections will certainly pay full attention when it takes place! The winner must come from somewhere, and it’s a simple fact that some barriers will have produced more than others. Whether that is just pure chance, who knows? Different track conditions and how a horse reacts in certain positions in a field can certainly be built into any consideration.

As you assess Golden Slipper tips and the odds available, you’ll soon realise that, with such young horses, matched with a lack of public exposure for some of them, it is likely to be a fairly unpredictable competition. It is historically true that horses from around Sydney do dominate the winner’s list, but interstate entries are always trying to amend that imbalance.

With all the above, we leave you to check and compare Golden Slipper odds, look at the runners and riders, and then give it your best shot. Good luck!

Golden Slipper Field and Odds

The Golden Slipper certainly provides an interesting challenge for both punters and bookmakers. With a field of young horses, many of whom may have had little public exposure, it can be difficult to craft the Golden Slipper odds and fully understand the form.

Of course, that doesn’t stop us all from trying! After all, it has become a hugely popular element of our extensive Australian racing calendar in the sixty years since Todman romped home. More of this great horse later. This popularity extends way beyond gamblers, jockeys, trainers and owners, as it’s a great public draw as well. With a prize fund of $3.5 million, this is hardly surprising. It is firmly in place as the premier two-year-old Australian racing occasion. Add to this the fact that it is also the world’s most valuable event for two-year-old thoroughbreds. It may be very much an Australian race but it also benefits from having the eyes of the racing world upon it.

It is held in the wonderful racing facility provided by Rosehill Gardens, noted for both a sweeping track and the beautifully presented flower borders. It’s a six furlongs race – well it was – nowadays we’ll call it a fast 1200 metres. With such a huge sum in the prize pot, many owners are keen to find a way for their horse into the Golden Slipper field.

One of the main ways to achieve this goal is to win one of seven designated races, held earlier in the year, where each winner gains immediate entry into the final Golden Slipper field. These are the Reisling Stakes, the Silver Slipper Stakes, the Magic Night Stakes, the Pago Pago Stakes, the Sweet Embrace Stakes, the Skyline Stakes, and the Todman Stakes. We did say that we’d be mentioning that wonderful horse again!

So, with the winners in place, how is the remainder of the field put together? Those two-year-olds who have been put forward are assessed to find out how much each has accumulated in prize money throughout their fledgeling careers. This process ends up with a full field of just 16 runners, plus a couple of emergencies. What we then have is a race that is often glorious in its unpredictability (many punters may reckon every race is like that).

Whether gambling is a great passion or an occasional activity, it’s good to have as much information as possible before reaching any betting decisions. Our terrific odds comparison tool is a great way to find out which bookmaker is offering what Golden Slipper odds – and you are then in control, deciding where to place those key bets. After that, it’s over to the starter and an anxious wait. But not for long - this is a quick race!
